About the position

The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to students in grades TK-12 in California. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily, complete all assignments, and attend required live instructional sessions. K12, inc. is our curriculum provider. Teachers provide daily, standards-aligned instruction in virtual classrooms, delivering targeted lessons that meet the diverse academic needs of students. In addition to whole-group instruction, teachers offer individualized and small group support, provide timely and meaningful feedback, and assess student progress through grading and ongoing formative assessment. Building strong relationships with students is essential. Teachers are expected to maintain consistent communication and provide academic and engagement support throughout the school year. They monitor student attendance, participation, and performance, implementing interventions when needed to ensure academic growth and student success. Middle school teachers typically instruct a single subject within a grade-level pod. Teachers are also expected to:      • Connect virtually with students monthly, at minimum      • Coordinate and attend quarterly in-person events      • Proctor state testing (virtual or in-person as required)

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in your subject area as part of a four-teacher instructional pod.
  • Develop, assign, and regularly review quarterly/semester coursework aligned to subject standards.
  • Provide daily instruction to individual students and/or small groups using data-informed practices.
  • Adapt instruction based on student assessments, academic needs, and learning styles.
  • Collect, review, and evaluate student work in a timely and professional manner.
  • Assign and submit mid-semester progress reports and semester report card grades.
  • Track and analyze student academic progress, attendance, and engagement daily and weekly.
  • Communicate proactively with families regarding concerns, progress, and support strategies.
  • Ensure accurate logging of attendance hours and correlation with lesson completion.
  • Administer and support completion of beginning, mid-year, and end-of-year assessments; use results to inform instruction.
  • Generate formal and informal student progress reports from conferences and academic data.
  • Conduct quarterly or as-needed virtual/in-person conferences with students and families to review academic progress and address social or developmental needs.
  • Counsel students on academic, behavioral, or adjustment concerns.
  • Respond to parent, student, and staff communications within 24 hours during the workweek.
  • Support families with school setup, curriculum guidance, and basic technical troubleshooting.
  • Plan and facilitate orientation sessions, training, school events, and community-building activities such as clubs, and service-learning opportunities.
  • Organize and attend school outings, open houses, and regional events as required.
  • Travel regularly within the assigned geographic area to support students and participate in school activities.
  • Actively participate in weekly team meetings, professional development (virtual and in-person), and all scheduled in-person staff meetings.
  • Engage in the SST/IEP process to support students with additional needs.
  • Complete all required documentation, including attendance spreadsheets, grade reporting, and compliance-related tasks.
  • Participate in the teacher evaluation and school self-assessment processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and organizational requirements.
  • Learn and test new technologies prior to implementation with students and families.
  • Support all aspects of standardized testing, including logistics, student preparation, and test administration.
  • Serve as a proctor for site-based exams and assessments.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and administration on special projects and school initiatives.
  • Assist with student placement decisions and changes in academic programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must hold a valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with an additional subject authorization in Mathematics, English, Social Science, and/or Science OR Must hold a valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential AND a Single Subject Teaching Credential with the subject matter authorization of Mathematics, English, Social Science, and/or Science.
