The Custodian position at San Jose City College, part of the San Jose/Evergreen Community College District, offers a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of campus facilities. This is a full-time, 12-month position working the night shift from 8:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday, with a 5% night shift differential added to the salary. The position is represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA), Chapter 363, which provides advocates for employee rights and benefits. The current annual salary range for this role is $60,635 to $73,960, commensurate with experience, with starting placement generally at Step 1. Reporting to the Custodial Supervisor, the custodian will perform a wide variety of duties including cleaning, maintenance, and setup of classrooms, offices, and other facilities. Tasks are designed to ensure a clean, sanitary, and secure campus for students, faculty, and visitors. The custodian operates an array of cleaning equipment like floor scrubbers, high-speed machines, and power-driven sweepers, and handles heavy-duty tasks such as moving furniture and setting up staging for events. This role also involves minor repair work, pest control using approved chemicals, and thorough cleaning of restrooms, cafeterias, and common areas. Besides physical tasks like sweeping and waxing floors, duties include locking buildings, setting alarms, and reporting any safety or security concerns promptly. This position requires effective communication skills, the ability to follow instructions, physical stamina, and experience operating various mechanical tools and equipment. Safety is a vital aspect, with custodians expected to use protective equipment and adhere to protocols for handling chemicals and hazardous materials.
